The WoSo Independent Podcast – Episode #9 – 2017 Seattle Reign Preview

In part three of their 2017 NWSL Preview, Chris (@chris_awk) and Jon (@jonlipsitz) discuss the prospects of former NWSL Supporters’ Shield winners Seattle Reign FC. Just how disappointing was their 2016 season? And how will the Reign cope with losing key players such as Kim Little and Kendall Fletcher as they try to get back into the playoffs in 2017?

Really enjoyed this conversation. I’ve got Seattle as a (very marginal) favorite to grab the last playoff spot, but agree with many of the concerns. I am a big fan of Nairn and if she can perform up to her level from last year, I think she could be a big addition.

One other thing I really liked was the conversation about what kinds of coaches are best in different circumstances. I do wonder, though, about Dames. Clearly he has a fantastic record developing players, but at this point Chicago is stacked enough that last year felt like a pretty significant underperformance. With that roster, they should have been bulldozing teams, but only ended with a +4 goal difference. I almost wonder whether Chicago might could use someone more like a Harvey to make that next push. Obviously, you can’t fire Dames but it’s possible he was the best guy to get them here but not necessarily the best one to capitalize. Curious to hear your thoughts once you get to Chicago.
